Sisters of the Second World War

Only a couple of generations ago, these sisters had everything to look forward to. Then the second world war broke out.

But despite losing friends, family and lovers, it didn't break them. They all went on to have amazing lives: working with the circus, emigrating, writing novels, breeding dogs....

Now the smiliest one is the only one left. Her riding days are over but her memories are vivid, and I try to record and write down as much as I can. The littlest one, gripping on behind, is my grandmother, who passed on her love of words and nature to me. All of them had children; some had grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren. We are a disparate bunch, tied together by this one picture taken 80 years ago.
